NB: For twenty three years I took emergency calls days, nights and weekends, including all the holidays. I can no longer function during my normal work days when I have been in the clinic from 2 to 5 AM with an emergency. We are fortunate in the metropolitan areas of the US nowadays to have full time emergency clinics. We still stay on call for all medical and surgical cases which we are currently involved with.
